Mindfulness Courses

Mindfulness Classes & courses for Wellbeing. Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and other courses in Sussex: Brighton, Hove & Lewes.

These mindfulness courses are relevant for anyone wishing to increase their general sense of wellbeing and appreciation of life, and manage it’s difficulties and challenges. The courses also provide and approach to life, and tools, that people have reported finding very helpful in their work roles, and personal relationships.

I run mindfulness courses in the venues below three times per year. My Winter courses start in Jan or Feb, my Spring courses start in April or May and my Autumn courses start in Sept or Oct. For more on the difference between MBCT and MBSR click here.

8-WEEK MINDFULNESS COURSES (MBCT & MBSR)

MONDAY EVENINGS in Lewes, Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy for Wellbeing, 7.30-9.40pm for 8 weeks. This course starts 23rd April and ends 18th June (no classes 28th May, 11th June and instead a session on Tues 12th June). Venue: TO BE CONFIRMED –  St Michael’s Church Hall, 158 High St, Lewes BN7 1XU – £175 (£125 concession). 

I was unable to book the venue on a Monday night for one week of the course and so session seven will be on Tuesday 12th instead. For those who can’t attend that one-off class on Tues 12th June there will be an option to join a video online group session Mon 11th June.

The course includes a substantial Course Handbook and a wide selection of guided meditation tracks.

This course is preceded by a free introductory talk – see side panel for dates. The course is accompanied by an All Day of practice – see side panel for date – which is an integral part of the original MBSR syllabus although I charge separately for it to keep costs down.

GRADUATE COURSE: DEEPENING MINDFULNESS 4-Week Course:

(Open to anyone who has already completed an 8-week MBSR or MBCT course)
I shall be running ‘Graduate Course’ twice each year (in March and in June/July). For dates and costs please see the side panel to the right.  These courses are on Thursday evenings 7.30-9.30pm, at the The Tree of Life Center in Hove 143 Portland Road, Hove, BN3 5QJ. The course length can vary each term.

June Course: 5 Thursday evenings  in Hove, Starts 21st June and finishes 19th July  2018. Venue: The Tree of Life Centre, 143 Portland Road, BN3 5QJ. 7.30pm-9.30pm.
Cost: £110 (£80 conc).

These course are for people who have already completed the 8-week course (either MBCT or MBSR) and want to deepen their practice of mindfulness.

It will explore the  ‘outline’ and themes of the 8-week course in more depth. I have found that on these courses ‘go deep’ quickly and become a rich and supportive envoronment for us to explore together our experience of doing the practices and bringing mindfulness into daily life. The courses also offer more space to explore specific issues that come up for participants and the discussion and exploration enables us to deepen an understanding of what it really means to be mindful.

Issues we can explore in more depth include:

  • Cultivating calm, focus, and freedom from rumination
  • Allowing the wisdom hidden inside distractions, blocks, obstacles, difficult thoughts and emotions to reveal itself.
  • Understanding how being ‘triggered’ and jarred by life situations
  • The value of both guided and unguided practice
  • Balancing practice with a focus (such as the breath or sounds) and practice which is ‘directionless’ (choiceless awareness)
  • Loving kindness meditation and self compassion

ONE-TO-ONE MINDFULNESS COURSES

This is an option for those unable to attend a group. The course consists of nine 50 minute sessions plus an ‘orientation’ session.

These courses are the same as the group-based courses (either following the MBSR program or the MBCT program) and they include all the same materials and themes. However, they are delivered one-to-one over the phone (or on Skype). It may alternatively be possible to do the course face to face at the Anahata Health Centre.
It is considerably more expensive to do a course this way and it also misses the learning that comes from the group interaction and shared discovery. However, it does have the advantage of an in depth one-to-one tutoring and guidance, and can be set at a time of day (with some flexibility too) to suit the needs of the individual. MINDFUL  PLAYFULNESS for SELF- EMPOWERMENT

 Sunday 20th May, 10.00am – 5.00pm,  Community Base 113 Queens Rd, Brighton, BN1 3XG cost £40 (£25 conc).
How does it feel to be confident and capable with your energy free-flowing – in touch with your strengths and competences? And how does that compare with feeling ‘stuck’ in life or in certain situations – hesitant, unsure, weak or blocked?

In this workshop we will use some short mindfulness practices and playful improvisation games to explore how we can we move from feeling stuck to recovering our natural confidence and capability. Laughter is a powerful tool to help us make this shift. Come prepared to enjoy yourself!

Being empowered doesn’t mean never feeling stuck or lost or overwhelmed. It means building trust that whatever we face we can and will recover our own unique and natural way of successfully engaging with life – meeting its challenges and opportunities and finding ways to thrive. Can we build confidence that we needn’t fear feeling constricted, overwhelmed, or self-critical? Can we come to trust that we can recover (or discover) our natural potency, capability and resourcefulness?

The day will include both serious and playful elements. There’ll be a mindful focus on awareness of sense perceptions, emotions, thoughts and sensations. And there’ll be plenty of lighthearted comical games designed to release us from our inhibitions and help us discover our natural spontaneity.

Could it be that you are bigger and more capable than you think you are? 

No prior experience of mindfulness or improvisation games is necessary to do this workshop.

MINDFULNESS ‘ALL DAY’ EVENTS

Mindfulness All Day (for people currently on a mindfulness course or who have previously completed one), Sunday 10th June, 10.30am – 4.30pm . Community Base 113 Queens Rd, Brighton, BN1 3XG. Cost for the whole day 10.30am-4.30pm, £30 (£20 concessions). Cost for just the morning 10.30am – 1pm, £15 (£10 conc). To book please contact me via the contacts page or give me a ring.

These events are an extremely valuable accompaniment to the 8-week course and are also for people who have already completed a course. They are an integral feature of the original MBSR course though I charge separately from them to keep costs down.  Many people report that attending an ‘All Day’ mindfulness event substantially deepens their experience of mindfulness.

What the All Day Involves

The ‘All Day’ mindfulness event runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm with a one hour break for lunch. I’d recommend coming to the whole day if you can. The day will include a selection of mindfulness meditations, mindful movement practices and inspirational poems and stories to help us touch the stillness, spaciousness and inner ‘wholeness’ that are our true nature. There a mixture of guided and entirely silent meditations and a balance of difference practices none lasting more than 40 minutes (and the freedom to change posture during the practices if necessary). The day will be mostly in silence with an opportunity to talk and connect with others at the beginning and at the end of the day.

Please bring a packed lunch or alternatively you can go to one of the many lovely local cafe’s for lunch if you prefer.
